Work-Related Hearing Loss
Certain occupations and industries are more likely to lead to sudden or gradual hearing loss. That is because even with the right safety equipment, such as noise-canceling headphones or over-the-ear protectors, loud noises and vibrations can do damage over time. The workers most at risk of losing their hearing tend to work in:
- Construction
- Demolition
- Landscaping
- Factories
- Refineries
- Emergency services
- Late night clubs
- Bars and restaurants
Your hearing loss could be the result of a one-time, high-decibel noise that ruptured your eardrum, such as an explosion or a gunshot. You may also lose your hearing more gradually because of a constant level of noise in the background of your job, such as a jackhammer or the incessant thumping of a bass. Either way, you could be entitled to workers’ compensation to help you.
Vision Loss as a Result of a Workplace Injury
Under the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act, vision loss is designated a specific loss; that means you are given an exact sum of compensation for your loss, regardless of what happens in the future. When you lose an eye or suffer permanent vision loss, you are paid out for 10 weeks for healing, and an additional 275 weeks for your loss. These numbers are set, so there is no negotiating or compromising: this is what you are entitled to receive. You will be given this amount even if you can return to the work you did, because it is considered a one-time payment, so to speak. If you cannot return to work, the attorneys of Larry Pitt & Associates. P.C. can help you apply for Social Security Disability benefits, so that you can rest easier knowing you are secure.
