What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is equated with typing and computer usage. It is true that people who work on computers are more likely to develop CTS; however, anyone whose job requires similar repetitive motions is at risk. Work-related activities such as assembly line work, frequent use of hand tools, or prolonged periods of writing can contribute to the development of CTS.

These repetitive actions cause inflammation and swelling around the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway in the wrist, putting pressure on the median nerve. Carpal tunnel symptoms include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers. Individuals may experience pain that radiates up the arm or a decrease in grip strength, making everyday tasks challenging. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent permanent nerve damage and to ensure workers can continue performing their job duties without enduring chronic pain.

Larry Pitt & Associates, P.C. has helped to protect injured workers for the last 40 years. If you have developed carpal tunnel, our dedicated workers’ compensation attorneys want to help you, too.

WHAT CAUSES CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

According to the Mayo Clinic, “the carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of your wrist. This tunnel protects a main nerve to your hand and the nine tendons that bend your fingers.” When that median nerve in your wrist is pinched or compressed, you can start to lose feeling and strength in your hand. This is called carpal tunnel syndrome.

The compression of that nerve can be caused by any number of things. Repeated stress on the wrists and nerves is a common cause, which is why CTS is considered a repetitive stress injury. You can also develop carpal tunnel if you:

  • Are exposed to vibrations from tools
  • Break or fracture your wrists or thumb
  • Fall against your wrists
  • Must scan items repeatedly (like a grocery store or retail worker)
  • Spend a lot of time typing
  • Work on an assembly line (like frozen food factory workers)

You may also develop a condition called cubital tunnel syndrome, which is similar to CTS in that you will experience numbness, tingling or pain in your hand. Cubital tunnel syndrome affects the nerve that runs behind your elbow, though, as opposed to the nerve that runs through your wrist. Your doctor will be able to diagnose which nerve is compressed or injured so that your application for benefits is both accurate and complete.

What Should You Do If You Suspect Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

If you suspect that you have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) due to repetitive motions at work, it’s crucial to take immediate action to protect your health and your potential workers’ compensation claim. Early intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and can help ensure you receive the necessary medical treatment and compensation. Here are several steps you can take if you suspect you have developed CTS:

  1. Recognize the Symptoms: Pay attention to common CTS symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in the hand and fingers, especially if these symptoms worsen at night or when performing repetitive tasks.

  2. Notify Your Employer: Report your symptoms to your supervisor or HR department as soon as possible. This establishes a record of your injury and is crucial for any future workers’ compensation claims.

  3. Seek Medical Attention: Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis. Your doctor can perform tests, such as the Tinel’s sign or Phalen’s test, to confirm CTS and recommend treatment options.

  4. Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of your symptoms, work activities, and any medical evaluations or treatments. This documentation will be valuable when filing a claim.

  5. Follow Medical Advice: Adhere strictly to your doctor’s recommendations, including any prescribed exercises, medications, or ergonomic adjustments at work.

  6. Consult a Workers’ Compensation Attorney: Reach out to a specialized attorney, such as those at Larry Pitt & Associates, P.C., to discuss your case and ensure you receive all the benefits you are entitled to under workers’ compensation laws.

By following these steps, you can better manage your condition and protect your rights as an injured worker. Remember, prompt action is key to preventing further injury and ensuring you receive the support you need.

Benefits of a Successful Workers' Compensation Claim for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in PA

If you successfully file a workers’ comp claim in Pennsylvania for carpal tunnel syndrome caused by work-related activities, you may be eligible for several benefits. These benefits are designed to provide financial support and medical care while you recover. The typical benefits include:

  1. Medical Expenses: Coverage for all necessary medical treatments, including doctor visits, surgeries, medications, and physical therapy.

  2. Wage Loss Compensation: Partial replacement of lost wages if you are unable to work due to the severity of your condition. This usually amounts to a percentage of your average weekly wage.

  3. Specific Loss Benefits: Compensation for the permanent loss of use of your hand or fingers, as determined by your physician.

  4. Temporary or Permanent Disability Benefits: Payments if your condition leads to temporary or permanent disability, calculated according to PA workers’ compensation laws.

These benefits aim to lessen the financial burden caused by your injury and help you regain your health and employment status.

CARPAL TUNNEL WORKERS AT RISK FOR DENIAL OF WORKERS' COMPENSATION BENEFITS

There are outside factors that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. One of those factors is inflammation. If you have a chronic inflammatory condition, you may develop CTS despite the nature of your job. This is why you need an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer on your side when you apply. If your case looks like your CTS was not the direct result of your work, then you could be denied benefits.

At Larry Pitt & Associates, we fight to ensure that does not happen. We work with your doctor and review your application for inconsistencies or errors. If you cannot work because of a chronic condition, we can help you apply for Social Security Disability as well. No matter what the outcome is, our team of attorneys is there to help protect your rights and your future.
