A Basic Breakdown of Wage Loss Benefits
Wage loss benefits are those which replace the wages you would normally collect for doing your job. Unlike specific loss benefits or death benefits, which are awarded once and set at a specific amount, wage loss benefits can vary, and can be awarded for a longer period of time. In the simplest terms, wage loss benefits work like this:
- Temporary Total Disability (TTD). These benefits are set for a specific amount of time and a specific amount of money. They are awarded when you cannot perform your job at all. Because they are temporary, the idea is that, eventually, you can return to your job.
- Permanent Total Disability (PTD). When you cannot work at all, and the chances are slim that you will ever be able to return to work, you could be awarded PTD. These benefits ensure that a portion of your salary is protected for life.
- Permanent Partial Disability (PPD). Because the injury resulted in permanent harm, there is no clear expectation that you will be able to return to your work, although you may be able to perform under “light duty.” There is no minimum weekly amount you can collect, but there is a maximum amount. You are able to collect PPD benefits for up to 500 weeks.
