How Dangerous is Farming, Really?
CBS News reported that “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there is an average of 63 fatal injuries and 12,500 nonfatal injuries and illnesses involving animals every year” – and that doesn’t even take into account the dangers of working on a farm without animals. Regardless of what you raise or grow, the chances are high that you might:
- Be exposed to toxic chemicals and poisons
- Be in an accident involving heavy machinery
- Contract airborne illnesses from the animals you raise
- Develop repetitive stress injuries
- Loss a limb in the course of your work
- Seriously injure your back, hips, knees, shoulders, wrists, hands or feet
- Suffer from broken bones, sprains and strains
- Sustain an injury from power tools

Complex Legal Matters Surrounding Agricultural Work
For all the good that farmers do, most states provide little to no recourse for injured farm workers. Pennsylvania does allow farm workers to collect workers’ compensation, but on a limited basis: “Employer[s] must provide workers’ compensation if the employer pays one agricultural worker wages of $1,200 or more, or furnishes employment to one employee in agricultural labor for 30 or more days in a calendar year.” This limitation excludes a lot of family farmers as well as day laborers.
But that does not mean you are out of options. If you cannot collect workers’ compensation for your injuries, you may still be able to file a third-party personal injury claim.
