Claiming Workers’ Compensation for Your Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful foot injury. If your plantar fasciitis was the direct result of your job duties or working conditions, you may be able to make a claim for workers’ compensation benefits.

People who are on their feet all day sometimes develop a painful inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. It is a very common cause of heel pain, and sometimes the inflammation can be so debilitating, it can leave you with the inability to walk. If you cannot walk, you may not be able to perform your job duties, putting you at risk of losing your job.

If your plantar fasciitis was caused by your job, you may be able to make a claim for workers’ compensation benefits. To file a successful claim for workers’ compensation, you must prove that your condition was the direct result of your job. For example, one of the causes of plantar fasciitis is obesity. Thus, a person who is overweight may develop the condition regardless of their job, meaning the workers’ compensation board may deny the claim.

You may have a good chance of receiving workers’ compensation benefits if:

  • You stand all day at your job
  • Your job requires a lot of walking
  • The floors where you walk are made of concrete or a similarly hard material
  • You were not instructed, or it was not suggested to you that a specific type of shoe would be best for your job requirements
  • You are in otherwise good health, and have no medical history pertaining to foot pain, inflammation, or other problems
  • You have never experienced plantar fasciitis before you began work at your current position

Certain occupations, including factory workers, teachers, and warehouse workers, are at an increased risk of developing plantar fasciitis because those jobs do not allow you to sit down or rest often, or because they require you to keep walking all day.

How to Make a Plantar Fasciitis Workers’ Compensation Claim

You will want to see a doctor as quickly as possible about your foot pain so that you can obtain a medical diagnosis and supply medical records when you file for workers’ compensation. You should notify your employer about your condition as soon as you receive a diagnosis. As with any Pennsylvania workers’ compensation claim, you must file within 120 days of learning that your illness is work-related to be eligible for benefits. However, the sooner you file, the better.
